NW GUILFORD COUNTY – If one of your new year’s resolutions was to quit smoking, the battle may be a little easier since the wispy strands of cigarette smoke that once lingered in the air of restaurants and bars across the state are now a thing of the past.
The North Carolina General Assembly approved a new law last spring prohibiting smoking inside restaurants and bars; the ban went into effect on Jan. 2. While some restaurant owners went smoke-free long ago, others waited until the deadline, fearing that the new no-smoking law will hurt their business.

MAR 13 - State lawmakers are still tweaking the smoking ban that took effect over a year ago.
The law prohibits smoking in restaurants that allow people under the age of 21.
Now, instead of requiring those restaurants to post "No Smoking Signs", the Senate is about to vote a on bill that would make places that still allow smoking to post "Smoking Permitted" signs.
The Blue Bar and Rack Room in Midtown allows smoking and employees say business has benefited.

NASHVILLE (AP), MAR 3 -- A proposal that would prevent establishments from being fined for not posting a no-smoking sign is advancing in the Legislature.
The measure sponsored by Sen. Dewayne Bunch, a Cleveland Republican, passed the Senate Commerce, Labor and Agriculture Committee 6-2 on Tuesday. The companion bill has been assigned to the Agriculture Committee.
